Biographica and Hudson River Biotechnology Partner to Take on Traits Breeding Has Not Cracked
Biographica and Hudson River Biotechnology have partnered to take breeding companies from a trait ambition all the way to a commercial-ready edited plant. Biographica finds the causal genes behind a trait, ranks them by how likely they are to work in the customer’s crop, with the evidence behind each ranking made explicit, and designs the DNA change. Hudson River then makes that change on its BioMaas editing and single-cell regeneration platform, delivering a transgene-free, genetically uniform plant in a single generation. Work starts with tomato, with vegetables and soft fruit to follow.
“Put those together and a customer can bring us a trait problem and get the whole way to a plant, which is not something either of us could offer alone,” said Dominic Hall, CEO of Biographica. Instead of launching with a fixed catalogue of traits, the two companies are inviting breeders, growers and plant product innovators to bring the trait challenge they have not been able to solve.
